The Liberty of Knowledge and Learning
“Liberty, in this context, refers to our freedom to seek and acquire information and ideas. When applying liberty to learning, we have this unfettered access to knowledge, which sits freely before us- it sits in abundance on bookshelves, technological interfaces, and the human voice of masters [past and present]…
One problem is often people are not introduced, exposed, or taught through a lens of seeing the ‘joy’ in this lifelong process. When the love of learning exists, all people are rewarded, and so ‘joy’ is like a secret ingredient in the art of teaching. True knowledge struggles to be assessed by multiple-choice or true-false test questions [yes, they have their purpose], but rather shows its fruits when assessed through the means of open dialogue, debate, and exchange of learned ideas. This free-flow of knowledge, without undue restrictions, such as having the ‘right answers’ or perfect standardized test scores, encourages crucial personal growth, societal progress, and ultimately advancement of human civilization. When lifelong self-learning is encouraged and established, we succeed in promoting intellectual autonomy [that is being able to self-govern with independence to learn], allowing people to form their own beliefs and make informed decisions based on a wide range of knowledge and viewpoints.
Socrates expressed, ‘I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.’
Wisdom is not simply possessing information, but rather, it is a respected given liberty to have an ongoing pursuit of knowledge and self-discovery.” -BrittAnn
